The AAPS are implementing a world language program in the elementary schools. Spanish instruction will begin this year with 3rd graders. 60 minutes a week is allocated. We are very pleased to have collaborated with the University of Michigan and they are sending apprentice teachers to the elementary schools to be the instructors. The apprentice teachers are more than ready having spent over a month this summer preparing lesson plans, discussing effective instructional strategies for 3rd grade students, and learning classroom management techniques. The building media specialist will monitor and mentor the Spanish apprentice teachers. The plan is to expand the world language program into the 4th and 5th grades.
The Ann Arbor Public Schools appreciates that our students will continue to grow, achieve, work, and prosper in a globally interconnected world. The District is committed to providing our students with a culturally rich educational experience, which will include the learning of languages other than English.
